Our beliefs and values

Redeemer Maastricht is a Christian church, and for us, it’s all about Jesus. His death and resurrection have set us free. We put this message—the gospel, or the good news of Jesus—at the center of our church and everything we do.

What we believe

DSC06253_edited.jpg

Not all Christian churches are exactly the same. What unites us is the belief that Jesus is God’s Son, who God sent to cover the sins of humanity, and that faith in Jesus gives us salvation.

What we believe at Redeemer may be what you’re used to from churches you’ve attend in the past—or it may be new to you. We provide this overview so you can understand our core beliefs and explore further as you get to know our church.

  • God has eternally existed in a community of three: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They are one in will and spirit. All are to be worshipped and all are equally God.

  • God made the world, and He has created humanity—men and women—in His image. Marriage is a gift from God reflecting His faithful, loving relationship with us: Christ and His Church.

  • The Church is made up of people, living and dead, who have turned to Jesus for their salvation. We are united to Jesus as “one body”.

  • The Bible is the written Word of God. We study the Scriptures to apply it to our lives in obedience to God, who speaks through them with life-giving power.

  • The Holy Spirit supernaturally gives abilities to believers—the “gifts of the Spirit” found in the Bible. We believe these are available to all who believe in Jesus.

  • Jesus instructed his followers to make disciples, baptising them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Baptism follows a personal decision to follow Jesus.

  • God has given all believers a mission to glorify Him by living and sharing the gospel—the good news about Jesus. Church life should be organized to achieve this mission.

  • Our church is led by a team of Elders, according to the model set out in the early church as seen in the book of Acts.

Our values

Our values drive our behaviour and our decisions. At Redeemer, our priority is to act like Jesus—shaped by the Gospel, rooted in the Word, reliant on the Spirit, and growing in an atmosphere of Grace.

Be like Jesus

We are called to be Jesus’ followers and disciples. Jesus is our primary example of how to live, and how to be in everything we think and do. We are and seek to be transformed on a daily basis to become more like Him.

Shaped by the Gospel

The gospel is the good news of Jesus: That even though we didn’t deserve it, and we couldn’t earn it, God has freely given us salvation. Therefore, we have nothing to boast about and we should have a posture of humility, generosity, compassion, and service.

Rooted in the Word

We can be shaped by the world—our culture, current events, our families of origin—or we can be shaped by God’s Word. We seek to be actively shaped by scripture and to base everything in our lives—as individuals and as a church—on the Word of God.

Reliant on the Holy Spirit

God has sent us the Holy Spirit to be our Helper, Companion, and Empowerer. We want to be a people who walk by the Spirit, following His guidance and being filled with the gifts of the Spirit, rather than aiming to do it all in our own strength.

Atmosphere of Grace and Joy

We’re a church family on a mission together. We relate to each other with the same grace God gives us: Mistakes aren’t fatal, and forgiveness is complete. We cultivate joy, believing joy comes from knowing the grace of God, rather than on our circumstances.

Prioritise the Lost

At one point or another, each of us was “lost.” That means not being in a relationship with God and experiencing His salvation. We are passionate about living our lives so that the gospel doesn’t stop with us—that we proclaim the news of Jesus where we live and work.

Help others thrive and grow

We believe that the best way to make disciples of Jesus is in community. We give our time, talent, and treasure to help those in our church community—our “brothers” and “sisters” in Christ—grow and thrive.

Build (leadership) teams

Just like the early church recorded in the New Testament, we recognize our need for one another. Realistically, there are leaders in our church and of teams. But this matters less than the team working together, serving the church and one another.

Contribute to community

Living in a community is not always easy. Like each one of us, other people can be challenging or be living through challenging situations. We believe, through God, in change and breakthrough for every person and every circumstance.
